So where is Auckland in relation to the rest of New Zealand? (at the bottom of the "finger" at the top of of the North Island). It's pretty spread out, and Auckland is not just a city, it also refers to the region, stretching from Wellsofrd and Warkworth in teh north to teh Bombay Hills in the south. Auckland City Centre (also caled the CBD) is located between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours.

The city spreads over a number of inter-connected land areas which are separated by inlets and harbours. One of the consequences of this is that there are few direct transport links, and these can be congested during peak hours. However this does mean a lot of coastline and water views!!

Auckland’s urban population was around 1.3 million in 2005, up from around one million in 2001. So it's growing! The Auckland region has just under 1.4m people.
